In this article, I will give you a complete and free guide to naming your blog.
There are many reasons why you want to start blogging, but it is one of the least expensive ways to start making money from the comfort of your own home.
You can pay as little as $2.95 per month up to $12.95 per month.
It all depends on which company you decide to use to set up your blog, and you can even start for free, so money doesn’t have to be an issue.
You can read more about it in my article Which hosting company is best for my blog.
In this article, I will cover:
- What you need to start a blog
- What you should think about when you name your blog
- Free resources to help you come up with a good name for your blog
What Do I Need to Start a Blog?
As with anything, there are paid options and free options for blogging.
Some are better than other things.
Here are the things you need to start a blog:
- A good name for your blog
- A platform where your blog will be stored and accessed
- Some graphic design tool to catch attention and help you get people to read your blog
- At least one social media account, preferably Pinterest, to get visitors
- A monetisation strategy to pay for the blog’s expenses
There are free options, but if you are going to do blogging professionally, you need all of the five things listed above.
What Should I Think About Before I Start My Blog?
The first thing you need to come up with is a good name for your blog.
A good name should tell the visitor immediately what the blog is about to set the expectations right from the start.
The first thing you should decide before you name your blog is what you will blog about.
Let me give you an example:
If your name is Annie and you want to write about different recipes, a name like Annie’s Recipe’s might be the right name for you.
However, it might not be good if you want to write about other things.
This blog is called Obtain Wealth Online since it shares different tips and techniques, and reviews on how you can make money online.
It wasn’t obvious first what I was going to call it.
However, I knew from the beginning that this blog would be about affiliate marketing and money-making tips, so I started to look for names related to these topics from the beginning.
Since I couldn’t come up with one immediately, I decided to choose a certain method to come up with a good name.
Naming Your Blog: The Thesaurus Method
All the good names will be taken in a highly competitive niche like affiliate marketing and making money online.
To give your blog a proper name and come up with a relevant name, I decided to use a method that I discovered online and decided to test it out.
It is called the Thesaurus method.
You start by thinking about a name, and then you go to Thesaurus.com and start typing the word or words you are thinking about, and that is how I came up with the name Obtain Wealth Online.
All the other names I could think about were either already taken or too expensive.
Then, I decided to purchase that name for $12.98 per year from Namecheap.com, which is one of the domain providers where you can purchase a .com, or a .net domain, which I highly recommend.
Naming Your Blog: Try to Get a.Com-Domain If Possible
It would be best always to strive to get a .com-domain because it shows people that you are serious and professional about your blogging.
A top-domain ending, or a .net or a .org-ending will also be okay.
Endings like .xyz, .blog, .info, or .personal look less professional and might not be good if it is not a personal blog that you are doing for fun, as a hobby, but as a business.
Allow me to give you two examples, as well as answer the question of whether you should name your blog after yourself or not.

Should You Name Your Blog After Yourself?
One of the most common questions people are beginning to blog will ask is if you should name your blog after yourself.
I will give you the most honest answer that I possibly can think of right now.
The answer might be a bit disappointing to you since the correct answer is: It depends.
Let me explain what I mean:
If you name your blog after yourself, it is tied to you as a person. If you want to build a personal brand, this is the recommended route for you to go, or if you only want to do blogging part-time.
However, it will be hard to sell since it will be closely tied to you as a person.
Naming your blog differently will not only make you look more professional, but at the same time, you will be building an asset, which can bring you in money for years to come. If you ever get tired of running that blog, you can sell it, and someone else can continue to blog since it is NOT tied to you or your personal brand, but a brand in its own right.
Where to Register Your Domain Name After Naming Your Blog
To buy a domain name, you need to purchase it from a domain registration provider unless you purchase it from your hosting company, which only two that I know of allows you to do.
Your domain name is like putting your name on a door. It is just an address.
Your domain name can be anything you come up with, and ideally, it should consist of one to two words, which I discussed above, as long as it is relevant to what you will be blogging about.
Below, I will share a list with some domain registration providers in alphabetic order:
- Bluehost (offers a free domain name for the first year if you sign up for any hosting plan that they offer)
- GoDaddy (offers a free domain name, and has great tools to help you come up with a name, and also offers cheap hosting)
- Google Domains (great service, but not available worldwide)
- Loopia (offers both)
- Namecheap (only offers domain names, and is the cheapest one)
Note: I might get monetary compensation if you decide to purchase after clicking on the links above.
Why Should I Purchase a Domain Name?
If you want to look professional, you need to purchase a domain name.
I do NOT recommend it if you use a free blogging option, and I only recommend it if you want to do blogging professionally, i.e., make money from your blogging.
It is wonderful if you want to start and test if blogging is for you.
What’s My Next Step?
After you have purchased your domain name from any of the providers, you need to purchase hosting. Hosting can be described as the house where your blog is.
NOTE: This is only recommended for anyone serious about blogging.
Best of luck!
